PUBLIC WORKS

To celebrate Australia’s Bi-Centenary in 1988, guild members worked on a wall hanging which was presented to the Lord Mayor of Hobart. It depicts a view of the Town Hall and its surrounds.

The Guild also has a wall hanging comprised of 4 inch squares. The squares were embroidered by members using embroidery styles of their particular choice. The wall hanging is often placed on display at various events such as the Royal Hobart Show, Embroidfest, craft fairs etc.

In 1998 Guild Members embroidered the ‘Transport Panel’ depicting transport in Tasmania through time and this Panel can be viewed in Hobart by special arrangement. Photographs of individual works from this panel are featured throughout this webpage.

Another wall hanging produced by Guild members is entitled ‘A Walk through the Gardens’. It was a group project undertaken by 26 members of the Guild and was the Guild’s contribution to the celebration of Hobart’s Bi-Centenary as well as 200 years of European Settlement in Tasmania. The wall hanging features a series of six panels representing a walk through the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

The Gardens were established in 1818 and are situated on the banks of the Derwent River. They are for many a treasured icon of the City of Hobart, affording peace and tranquility and are a wonderful place to visit with family and friends.

‘A Walk through the Gardens’ provides the viewer with a feeling of the ambience and beauty of the gardens through the wonderful design and embroidery skills of Guild members.

The Wall Hanging was officially unveiled by Peter Cundall on 11th May 2005 and is on display at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
